Environmental Education and Volunteerism AmeriCorps Member

The purpose of this position is to recruit and educate volunteers from diverse communities including civic groups, schools, church groups, and outdoor enthusiasts to conduct on the ground habitat restoration projects. Special attention will be given to recruitment of diverse local groups throughout NC. We believe that many youth in these areas may not understand the significance of their own "backyard", and that by instilling in them a sense of place and an understanding of conservation, we will lead them to become more active and engaged in conservation efforts. Positions are based in Asheville, Greensboro, Durham, Raleigh, and Wilmington.

Service Activities

Organize, schedule, and lead multiple volunteer work days, including recording volunteer data and work accomplished.
Recruit volunteers from (and build relationships with) diverse communities including civic groups, schools, church groups, and outdoor enthusiasts to conduct habitat restoration projects.
Assist in planning and conducting outreach and environmental education events in the community to increase community awareness.
Give community presentations, and provide information to community partners about the importance of conservation.
Reach out to Tier 1 public schools throughout the host sites geographic areas to begin to build relationships with science, technology, and other teachers to develop field trips and class projects focused on learning new conservation and environment skills.

Increased environmental education in rural North Carolina public schools and community centers, increased diversity of volunteerism rates in rural counties for the environment

Position Outcomes

The position will result in having youth and adults participate in environmental education programming, and a portion of those educated seeing a significant increase in knowledge towards positive behaviors around protecting the environment and conservation.
