The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe strives to uphold the Tribal Ancestral Vision and Leadership in order to preserve and protect our lands, Tribal sovereignty, language, history, culture and the general welfare of the NUCHU; Serves to provide for the long term economic needs of the Tribe and its members through economic development of Tribal Resources; Enhance the quality of life; Promotes strong work ethic and personal independence for NUCHU, while strongly upholding the "government to government" relationship with local, State and Federal governments that benefits the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. The Kwiyagatu Community Academy, a proposed Ute Mountain Ute language and culture charter school in Towaoc, Colorado, will be an important and critical new addition to the educational services in the Montezuma County region of Colorado, when it opens in Fall 2021. The VISTA member will coordinate curriculum development projects and training service opportunities for prospective teachers. In addition, they VISTA member will be responsible for grant writing and fundraising for needed equipment and facility needs for the Academy. Furthermore, the Vista member will assist the leadership team in developing policies and best practices for the Academy to be a success. The Vista member will work closely with the Director, staff and community partners of the Educational Center that are establishing the Kwiyagatu Community Academy. The UMUT and Colorado State University – Extension would like to develop the infrastructure for creating impactful environmental programs on the reservation. The VISTA member will be responsible for building capacity with both organizations. The VISTA member will get the chance to work with both organizations on identifying impactful projects for the UMUT tribal members. This may include agriculture, land management and conservation projects.
