I would like to participate in a service year because I want to get hands-on experience working with and in the community. More specifically, I aspire to work with the refugee and immigration population. I am a TEFL certified English teacher and I want to apply the skills I've gained while working abroad to working with refugees and immigrants in the United States. Ultimately, I’m interested in serving because I want the work that I do to be meaningful and relevant. As a graduate of Community and Justice Studies, it’s very important to me that I seek out work that has a positive impact on the community. The foundation of my education was rooted in economic and racial justice. I want to be working towards making these concepts a reality. One of the most formative projects of my undergraduate career was an independent research project that focused on expanding our campus’s farmer’s market to areas in the city that have been labeled food deserts. It was during this time that I was introduced to the refugee population and realized how crucial and important it is that this community has access to the necessary resources needed to survive and thrive in the United States. After graduation, I began traveling and I received my certification in teaching English. Teaching English abroad has provided me with a variety of new skills that I am eager to apply to working with refugees and immigrants in the United States. I developed a passion for teaching and working with students to further their education. For these reasons, I am very eager to begin working with the refugee and immigration community. Though I am dedicated to teaching, I’m more interested in gaining any relevant experience working with refugees and immigrants. In whatever capacity, I want to become familiar with the processes, challenges, and requirements that exist for refugees and immigrants who come to the United States. By participating in a service year program I will be able to apply my education and skills to working towards bringing forth justice for the community.
