Empowering students from low-income families to access, enroll and graduate from college at rates equal to their more advantaged peers

  • About Us
Founded in 2006 at Seattle’s Garfield High School, College Access Now (CAN) empowers students from low-income families to access, enroll and graduate from college at rates equal to their more advantaged peers. This academic year, we will grow to serve more than 2,200 students annually, including 1,050 students at eleven Seattle and South King County high schools and over 1,150 students at colleges across Washington State and throughout the country.

After over a decade of service, our program results speak for themselves. We’ve served over 2,000 students on their journey to a college degree, and more than 99% have graduated high school and been accepted into college. Of those students, 94% have actually enrolled—twice the national average for students from low-income families and even higher than their more advantaged peers. Students join CAN's program in junior or senior year of high school - receiving intensive one-on-one coaching from our team of AmeriCorps College Coaches and volunteer mentors throughout high school. Our near-peer coaching and small cohort model, combined with structured curriculum and full-time presence on-site at schools, allows us to provide the consistent and intensive support our students seek as they prepare for college.

We know that getting into college is only half the battle. We’re equally proud of the work we’re doing with our college students through one-on-one and group advising from our College Services team, a summer support series, weekly peer learning communities, quarterly events, and career coaching. To date, more than 90% of our students who enroll in college persist from their first year to the second—one of the most critical tipping points for students on their path to graduation. Overall, more than 60% of our first cohorts have already completed their degrees, and we continue to support many more that are still enrolled. With every degree, we’re inspired by the determination and drive of our students.
