Description

The City of New Orleans VISTA program is implemented by the Office of Mayor LaToya Cantrell and the Office of Youth and Families. The City is seeking passionate individuals to build capacity to break the cycle of poverty and empower our community. New Orleans is a welcoming city with a unique culture, plentiful natural spaces, and a reputation for hospitable and friendly residents.

The Office of Youth and Families (OYF) works to improve child well-being by increasing coordination between agencies, expanding resources, ensuring equitable policymaking, and engaging youth and community input. OYF serves as the link between the Mayor's Office, the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC), the New Orleans Public Library (NOPL), the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center (JJIC) and New Orleans Public Schools (NOLAPS).

The VISTA Service Year is dedicated to building capacity for the following programs: (1) Pathways, a year-round internship for system involved youth, (2) Summer Success, a work readiness program for system-involved youth, (3) Parent Leadership Training Institute, a 20-week intensive leadership program for parents and caretakers, (4) Mayor's Youth Advisory Council Leadership, a council for youth ages 14-18, (5) Junior Civic Leadership Academy Youth Civic Education Program hosted in partnership with the Office of Neighborhood Engagement, (6) 'Mayor for a Day' Writing Contest, an annual essay contest for youth interested in civic leadership.

By joining the Office of Youth and Families the VISTA member will gain a thorough understanding of program and project management, communications, youth programming, and city government.

Member Duties:

Throughout one year of service, the VISTA member will work with the Office of Youth and Families to support signature programming and events. The project objectives will include creating activities, facilitating community and employer outreach, creating program handbooks and manuals, and other activities that improve the efficiency, reach and sustainability of OYF programming. The VISTA member will work to support communications in the office though constituent outreach, website and newsletter development, and the creation of engaging social media content. The VISTA will also work with major stakeholders in the youth sector as a project manager for the Community Services working group. The working group is vital in creating a space for City information to be disseminated throughout the community as well as creating a space for partners to bring up issues.
