Description
The City of New Orleans VISTA program is implemented by the Office of Mayor LaToya Cantrell and Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. The City is seeking passionate individuals to build capacity to break the cycle of poverty and empower our community. New Orleans is a welcoming city with a unique culture, plentiful natural spaces, and a reputation for hospitable and friendly residents.
NOLA Ready is the City of New Orleans Emergency Preparedness Campaign, which shares information with New Orleans residents, businesses, and community groups about how to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. In addition to crisis communications and year-round community outreach, this team manages the NOLA Ready Volunteer Corps which supports on-the-ground emergency operations and resilience efforts.
The VISTA project will expand the reach of NOLA Ready’s emergency preparedness initiatives within vulnerable communities, including New Orleans’ low-income, BIPOC, and elderly communities, by increasing community awareness and volunteer capacity. The VISTA will develop outreach strategies to build relationships with key community leaders and organizations, create and distribute appropriate and engaging outreach materials, design and give emergency preparedness presentations, and assist in the recruitment of a diverse volunteer corps.
In grey skies and blue skies, VISTAs will learn about emergency preparedness in formal settings (ex: trainings) and informal settings (ex: during planning sessions or response). VISTAs also have the opportunity to network and collaborate with leaders in the disaster space as well as with community leaders.
Throughout one year of service, the VISTA member will work with the Department of Homeland Security NOLA Ready to:
(1) Develop effective, inclusive, and innovative outreach and engagement initiatives that increase awareness of NOHSEP programs which support low-income residents and vulnerable communities.
(2) Implement project initiatives towards the continued development, coordination and promotion of the NOLA Ready Volunteer Corps.
