The City of Roswell AmeriCorps After School Project ("project") will support nonprofit partner STAR House Foundation in enhancing local after school programming. The project will operate in three Title I elementary schools in Roswell, serving participating students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. City of Roswell AmeriCorps After School Project members will serve as tutors, providing academic support to participating students, with an emphasis on building literacy proficiency, as well as assisting with homework, STEM activities and health and wellness programming. Interested parties may apply through the My AmeriCorps portal.

Service Activities

City of Roswell AmeriCorps After School Project members will be assigned to a specific after school site, and serve alongside the site director and staff to tutor and provide academic support to participating students, with an emphasis on building literacy proficiency, as well as improving overall academic performance.

Members must be available to serve in an after school setting during the hours of 2-5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, concurrent with the Fulton County Schools calendar.

Members will provide a minimum of 60-90 minutes of literacy and other academic instruction daily, to include the provision of homework support, help with STEM activities and health and wellness programming, allowing for transitions between activities.

Members will report on individual, academic progress observed during tutoring, and may also help with measurement of overall progress toward project goals, for example, by conducting literacy curriculum assessments.

Members will assist with family engagement through meetings and information sessions with parents of participating students, and will recruit volunteer(s) to help the project's nonprofit partner.

Members will also serve the larger community on National Days of Service.

Additional training will be required for all project members to include curriculum, health and safety and mandated reporter training. CPR/First Aid training is encouraged and will be provided where possible. Members will be instructed in virtual tutoring should it become necessary and a viable option.

Personal Protective Equipment, or PPE, is expected to be required consistent with school and/or partner mandates. Members will also wear the AmeriCorps logo while serving.

Applicants to the City of Roswell AmeriCorps After School Project who are attending college may wish to check whether their school or program will allow for experiential learning hours/credits as a result of participation. AmeriCorps members may qualify for federal student loan forbearance during their service term, and AmeriCorps members age 55+ who do not wish to use the education award for themselves, may transfer the award to a family member. In addition to initial, required trainings, professional learning opportunities will be offered, as will a Member Assistance Program (MAP).
