Description

City of Lakes AmeriCorps members serve in middle schools throughout the Minneapolis Public Schools district providing academic support and after school enrichment opportunities for Long-Term English Learners. Our ability to support the academic and developmental needs of our students depends upon the one-on-one relationships members build with their students and is at the heart of all that we do.

City of Lakes AmeriCorps (CoL) is one of the oldest AmeriCorps programs in the Twin Cities. For over 25 years, our members have served the youth of Minneapolis. CoL members gain unparalleled hands-on experience working with students, teachers, families, and fellow corps members. They serve as a cohort of emerging leaders who focus on developing their professional and interpersonal skills while exploring the fields of education and youth development within the context of a large urban school system. Specifically, a CoL Academic Coach supports middle school Long-Term English Learner students (LTELs) by providing four research-based interventions: Academic Language instruction, push-in support for school day classes, parent engagement, and after school activities. Full-time members provide all four interventions, while part-time members complete two, three or four of these interventions depending on their schedule and availability. Part-time commitment levels are offered at 1200 total hours (approx 30 hours per week) and 900 total hours (approx 23 hours per week) over a 10-month period.
