Members of AmeriCorps Miami Reads provide reading tutoring to more than 200 K-5 students each year while working collaboratively with community agencies to strengthen communities. The goal of AmeriCorps Miami Reads is to provide individualized reading tutoring to low achieving students, with 80% of the students achieving an increase of at least one grade level in reading.

Individuals should exemplify the following characteristics. Motivated and directs students successfully,organized, self driven, desire to work with students in elementary and middle schools and work well with co-workers, school administration, faculty, and staff. Adapting to new ideas and changing situations, flexible, great communication skills and a desire to work on community service projects.

Service Activities

Service activities are followed;
-provide in school tutoring in reading (intervention)
-provided pre and post assessments to assigned students (required)
-community service projects (group effort required)
-able to work with a group of students (after- school program)
-arts and craft
-sports

Community Need Addressed

We mobilize communities to address both academic and non-academic barriers to learning to help our students. With the AmeriCorps tutors we are able to address the wide spread issue of low reading performance and social skills.
Provides in-school early-intervention literacy tutoring to K-5 students in elementary schools and one middle school during the school day; and extends our school-day services in one elementary school and one middle school to provide after-school programs that focus on academic supports such as literacy skills-building and homework assistance, as well as life skills, arts enrichment, and fitness activities for children and youth K-12.

Position Outcomes

Our desired outcome is to have 80% of students will show an improvement in the ORF (Oral Reading Fluency assessment) for elementary students and ISTEEP for our middle schools students. Student's will be provided a pre and post assessment. The assessment with aid in determining the students growth. In addition students will engage with a caring adult to promote positive social skills.
