Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) Home Repair Crew Members serve in teams of 2-3 and assist the employee or volunteer crew leader in home repairs and new construction for low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Some members serve in CAP's Housing Program, which does major rehabs for individuals and families, while others serve in our Elderly Housing Program, which has a specific focus on smaller repairs and improvements that makes home more accessible for the elderly and disabled.

Service Activities

--Under the guidance of the Lead Person, performs construction activities and leads the activities of volunteers and homeowners to perform
home repairs/new construction on houses/property owned by low-income persons to improve living conditions of the occupants.
--Responsible for the care and accountability of all equipment and tools.
--Required to have/develop carpentry skills/leadership skills in order to lead crews in repair and construction or perform repair/construction
in the absence of a group.
--Advises program participant(s) of other services provided by CAP that he or she would qualify for. Crew member would connect
participant with program personnel responsible for assisting participants in the application process of additional services.
--Serves in other CAP and AmeriCorps programs when doing so does not interfere with the above duties.
--Participates in additional training and enrichment opportunities as assigned.

Community Need Addressed

Corps members address substandard housing in rural, low-income counties.

Position Outcomes

Corps members will will increase the safety, accessibility, and livability of housing among low-income home owners.

In addition to the benefits described above, members also receive access to free mental health counseling. All food and housing is provided for members who choose to live in a CAP volunteer community house. Members who choose to live on their own receive an increased living allowance in lieu of room and board.
