Conservation Corps New Mexico

This program engages motivated young adults (ages 18 to 25) to travel regionally to complete challenging and impactful conservation and service projects (trail work, invasive species removal, habitat restoration, etc) throughout southern New Mexico.
Field Crews generally camp out on eight day 'hitches' and have six days off between to explore the Southwest or rest up for their next project.
Crews camp out together and food is provided during the eight days in the field although housing and food is not provided on off days. Some crews will receive additional training in chainsaw use to complete projects which address fuels reduction, forest restoration needs and invasive species eradication.

Community Need Addressed

Our conservation corps crews work to complete a wide variety of projects such as:
-Conservation work of a wide variety
-Trail Maintenance and Construction
-Invasive Species Removal and Planting Natives
-Fencing work on public lands
Furthermore, these crews are the next generation of public lands managers. As such we not only get work done, but also connect crews with land management partners, and give young adults the leadership skills that will help them throughout their lives.

Position Outcomes

- Professional development, networking, learning hands skills (trailwork, rock work etc) and certifications (wfa, possibly chainsaw certification)
Ultimately we seek to help connect young adults to the land through hard work, outdoor living, and community.

Food is provided during projects. Transportation is provided from office to project sites. Wilderness First Aid, and other certifications are generally provided although not guaranteed. On the job training and experience building.
