The AmeriCorps Mentoring Specialist (AMS) will serve as a Big for waitlist Littles (ages 5-18) in a group mentor setting during afterschool hours and Saturdays. The AMS will focus on building upon and creating lessons for the youth that are centered on our 5 Big Pillars: Academic Enrichment, Music & the Arts, Digital Literacy, Career Pathways and Health & Wellness. AMS will also assist in volunteer recruitment and child recruitment for the Group Engagement and Mentoring (GEM) Department.

Service Activities

Prior to the youth arriving to the Carnival Center for Excellence (CCE), AMS's will prepare for youth programming, handle any child, parent, volunteer inquiries specific to the GEM department, attend child/volunteer recruitment events and participate in professional development opportunities/trainings. Once the youth arrive, AMS's will lead all activities with the youth in 45-60 minute sessions with the supervision of the AmeriCorps Program Manager.

Community Need Addressed

Mentorship for at-risk youth.

With the help of the AMS, youth will improve academic engagement, social-emotional skills, increase attendance and decrease disciplinary incidents.

Position Outcomes

Provide mentorship to Littles who are on our waitlist to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. Through the group mentorship, youth will participate in programming related to our 5 Big Pillars. Through the group mentorship programming, youth with improve academic performance and show improved behavior.
