The Meelia Center for Community Engagement back at my college should be credited for the spirit of volunteerism that I now possess. I was given the opportunity to serve as a volunteer coordinator; leading other students to volunteer while engaging in the work myself. My first opportunity was working at an elementary school as a class aide for two years. Through the Campus Ministry, I spent a week of my winter break in the city of Camden, NJ and this experience opened my eyes to poverty that I never thought existed in America. The following year, I spent another winter break working with Habitat for Humanity in Vineland, NJ. It was here that I learned that time is just as valuable as money while serving others. And when I studied abroad, I had the opportunity to teach English at a Thai school. I spent the second half of college tutoring underrepresented immigrants and refugee students who have the hopes of attending college someday. Although it was heartbreaking to see seniors who did not know how to write essays, it was more rewarding to watch the progress the students made from one week to another. My career goals have been influenced by these experiences. While working as a volunteer coordinator, I declared a major in Sociology my sophomore year in hopes that I will work towards becoming a social worker someday. Although this may not be true as of today, I still have plans to work as an English teacher to non-native speakers. I volunteer as a way to give back to the community for the many opportunities that I have benefited from. Volunteering teaches me about humility. I have learned to be more grateful for my life over the years. And that is why now; I waste as little as possible because I learn from those I work with. I would like to pass this on to those around me. I want to learn about, live, and teach about the life of simplicity and gratitude.
My name is Basirat Sanni but you can call me “B” (yes, just the first letter, B). I was born and raised in Nigeria until I moved to the United States when I was 15. I lived in Providence with my family until I came out to the West Coast for service. Before that, I went to Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH where I graduated with a B.A. in Sociology and minored in Psychology and Peace & Justice Studies. The highlight of my college year was when I got the opportunity to study abroad during my junior year. My love for learning about cultures, especially Asian cultures drew me to Thailand for the first half of the semester and then Vietnam for the second half. I love to travel and meet new people so I am excited to see what this new endeavor will bring me.
