Under the direct supervision of the Volunteer Coordinator, the Mentorship Program Developers will develop, implement, and supervise an evidence-based mentorship program within the AYCC’s After School Program, Teen Club, and Camp Tracy.
• Researching and identifying best practices regarding safety, liability, effectiveness, and scope of reach for mentorship program.
• Create and execute a work-plan to recruit and match, train and schedule, retain and supervise mentors.
• Work extensively with staff and leadership within the After School Program and Camp Tracy to become familiar with the local population, AYCC members, and youth.
• Meet weekly with the Volunteer Coordinator to review program plans, plan future events, and discuss program-related issues.
• Track and report monthly on enrollment and retention rates, and overall effectiveness of mentorship program.
• Understand, interpret, and articulate the mission of the Americorps and the Alfond Youth and Community Center.
• Attend and complete training sessions (20% of total hours served), including, but not limited to, certification courses for First Aid and CPR, lifeguarding, and Wilderness First Responder.
Community Need Addressed
With 3 out of 5 public schools in Waterville scoring an average rating - 5/10 - and both the Junior and Senior High scoring below below average - 3 and 4 out of 10 respectively - area youth are not achieving the academic success needed to break the cycle of poverty. Whether entering the workforce, or going on to higher education, our youth are not prepared academically or personally for success once they leave high school.
We will address this educational disadvantage by pairing at-risk students with two mentors and/or tutors. The mentors will serve as a consistent, encouraging, and positive presence in the at-risk youth's lives.
Our hope is to see increased academic engagement, enrollment in higher or post-secondary education, and improved social-emotional skills.
