National Service and American Democracy

Service Year Alliance has partnered with Arizona State University to help corps members learn about how their service connects to the history of service and civic engagement in America while also providing the option to receive college credit. Our course, National Service and American Democracy, is designed to cover the current state of civic engagement in the US and how national service plays a role, as well as prompt learners to think about their own personal views and involvement with civic engagement and national service. This course is part of ASU’s Global Freshman Academy.

Program Dates

Next session: March 16th to May 6th 2020, for a total of 7.5 weeks.  Sign up by: March 13, 2020 We anticipate a session offered each spring and fall. Check back for updates on dates for the next session or email resources@serviceyear.org.

  • Level: Anyone can take this course! This class will be available through ASU’s Global Freshman Academy, which makes first year college courses available to anyone around the world. We highly encourage currently serving corps members to take this course, and for those that are not serving, we hope this motivates them to explore a service year as an option for their future!
  • Track options: To earn academic credit for this course, click Pursue Credit and pay the $25 credit eligibility fee. With a final grade of “C” or higher, you can pay the $400 tuition (within a year of course completion) to earn college credit. Your Segal Education Awards can be used to pay this course tuition. If you do not want academic credit, you can audit this course for free!

  • Host organizations can promote enrollment to their corps members. Note - corps members must sign up with their own email - programs cannot bulk-enroll. 
  • Provide time during service year hours for members to work on this course. This is a great starting block for service-focused reflection and professional development geared toward post service plans!
  • Regularly check-in with corps members on progress.
  • Provide incentives for course completion.
