Member serves as a mentor for adults with intellectual & developmental differences and/or mental health disorders in Duval county. The members are serving in partnership with The Arc Jacksonville and agree to abide by the mission & vision of the agency.
Service Activities
Develop and implement customized wellness focused activities to the needs of particular sub-populations of persons with differences (i.e., workshop, lifeskills, etc.)
Develop and implement customized independent living activities (i.e. budgeting, computer training, remedial academics tutoring, cooking skills, and other home economics)
Design and facilitate customized recreational activities that enhance social and daily life skills (i.e., board games, arts/crafts, etc.)
Provide one-on-one and small group social mentoring
Provide remedial tutoring and/or facilitate basic academic skill enhancement activities
Develop and implement cultural activities (i.e. art, music, current event discussions, etc.)
Community Need Addressed
In Jacksonville, adults with I/DD/MH lack essential skills: social, educational, health/wellness, work readiness, independent living, and self-determination, which are necessary to become independent and contributing members of society. Poor outcomes are often the result of I/DD/MH populations being grossly underserved during critical educational experiences, and
insufficient opportunities to experientially learn different aspects of independent living (fitness, nutrition, social skills).
Position Outcomes
The Project provides 1:1 and small group mentoring to these individuals to focus on the following skills: Health & Wellness, Financial Literacy, Employability and Independent Living. Members work with clients on education, advocacy, and soft skill development in controlled training environments and experientially while out in the community. The Projects interested outcomes include increasing clients knowledge base in these priority areas: increasing clients community connections and social ties, long term attitude and behavior change in clients and members, and awareness at large about people with I/DD and their ability to be contributing members of the community.
