YouthPride AmeriCorps Tutor

The AmeriCorps Members of the Centro Campesino YouthPride afterschool and summer camp program will provide tutoring to more than 150 K-8th grade students in an effort to ensure that 80% of the children who regularly attend the program for 30 days or more will improve their academic performance by increasing at least 15 words as determined by the Oral Reading Fluency Pre, Mid and Post assessment.

Service Activities

To combat illiteracy and increase the standards in academic achievement in the Homestead and Florida City community by seeking new and innovative ways to motivate and enlighten the children of our community through volunteerism and civic awareness, parental engagement, community partnerships and scholastic & cultural enrichment, one student at a time

Community Need Addressed

Limited English skills and literacy, at risk behavior due to prevalence of drugs and crime, lack of parental involvement since many area parents must work two jobs to support their families and assistance to provide relief in times of disasters such as hurricanes.

Skills you will gain

A. The Member certifies that he/she is a United States citizen, a United States National, or a legal permanent resident and at least 17 years of age. B. The Member certifies that he/she holds a high school diploma or its equivalent and has passed a proficiency test of reading. C. The Member understands and agrees to complete one full year of half-time service (900 hours) in the Program for the time period defined under the Terms of Service section of this contract. D. The Member demonstrates competencies in areas as required by the service site. E. The Member agrees to submit to the training requirements of the Program and/or service site. F. The Member agrees to submit to a fingerprint and federal criminal background check and Sexual Predator check as required by the service site and/or Program. Enrollment and eligibility of member is subject to successful background/fingerprint clearance. Member will be disqualified from service if the results are analyzed and found to be unacceptable to the service site or to the Program. G. The Member agrees to meet minimum standards as stated by the Program and/or service site. Enrollment will be contingent upon the member meeting these qualifications. H. Misinformation or omission of information (on the AmeriCorps application) can result in disqualification and/or termination as an AmeriCorps member. I. The Member understands that his/her failure to disclose to the Program any history of having been released for cause from another AmeriCorps program will render the Member ineligible to remain in the program, nor may they receive the education award voucher.
