In the years since graduating from college, I have been fortunate enough to have had steady employment working as a microbiologist. However, after working full-time in a laboratory for the past six years, I've come to realize that this isn't the path that I am supposed to follow.I have done a lot of self-reflecting on what I felt was the most fulfilling and enjoyable work I've done in my life, and I keep coming back to the times I was working to improve the communities I was apart of. My time volunteering as a mentor to underprivileged students in Oakland, CA was one of the most rewarding experiences I had as a college student. In addition to this, working to improve children's nutrition as a research assistant at The Atkins Center for Weight and Health was the last time I felt my work was truly meaningful. As someone who is looking for a career change, I am hoping a year as an AmeriCorps member will allow me to challenge myself, learn more about my strengths, and ultimately, transition into a field of work that is truly meaningful to me and my community. No doubt, I will face challenges in a year of service, but the fervor and excitement I feel at the chance to be an Americorps volunteer makes me believe this is the right choice for me.
I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2012 with a Bachelor's degree in Integrative Biology. I currently work full-time as a Microbiologist in Milwaukee, but have decided that it is time for a career change. Since leaving the San Francisco Bay Area, I haven't had the opportunity to volunteer as much as I would have liked to due to family obligations and working full-time, but upon seeing opportunities to work again in the service of improving communities, I feel a fervor and excitement at the possibility of becoming an AmeriCorps member.
