AmeriCorps Math Tutors serve in school-based teams focused on supporting students in Algebra and Geometry through one-on-one tutoring sessions. They provide a personalized approach and a caring, positive relationship with the students they support throughout the school year to help the student engage in school, master the fundamentals they need to succeed, and take control of their education.

Service Activities

- Tutoring students in structured one-on-one tutoring sessions during the school day and shortly after.
- Supporting and serving alongside volunteer tutors from the Madison community and UW Madison.
- Developing positive relationships with school staff, parents and guardians, and program partners to ensure student success.

Community Need Addressed

Our AmeriCorps Math Tutors work one-on-one with students to support their achievement in Algebra and Geometry, making them more likely to graduate on time. A community partnership made up of the Madison Metropolitan School District, the United Way of Dane County, the Morgridge Center for Public Service, and the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District is working together to help all students graduate from high school ready for career, college, and community.

Position Outcomes

AmeriCorps members provide support to students to improve their math proficiency, support their on-time graduation from high school, and open new opportunities and trajectories in higher education later on.

Serve with a more flexible, 35-hour-per-week schedule that includes generous time off, including Spring Break and Winter Break, and ends when the regular school year ends! At Achievement Connections, we train extensively to ensure our tutors are equipped with the best tutoring practices available during their service year. You'll be oriented in how to structure a tutoring session, how to deploy tools that help students learn, and how to create relationships that help students engage and succeed. Training throughout the year includes sessions on cultural competency, trauma-informed care, volunteer management, and conflict resolution. We also believe in giving our AmeriCorps members a competitive edge when their service year concludes, so we provide training in building resumes and cover letters, conduct mock interviews, and work with local partners on up-to-date job hunting methods.
