Half Time Afterschool Instructor

4-H CAPITAL AmeriCorps members teach hands-on science activities in an afterschool setting at Title I elementary and middle schools in the Austin, TX area. Members serve at-risk youth during afterschool by providing hands-on, project based science programs in five core areas (Animal Science, Youth Gardening, Natural Resources, Engineering, and a wildcard curriculum).

Service Activities

Half Time members lead classes 2 days a week and assist another instructor 2 days a week. Members will develop semester unit plans for each of their lead classes using a combination of predetermined lessons and lessons they create. Half of our Half Time Members are Animal Science assistants in the fall and must be comfortable working with live goats weighing up to 120lbs (training provided). Typical Half Time Member service hours are 1:00pm - 6:00pm, Mon - Fri, with an additional 30 hours of outreach service required. Most programs run Mon-Thurs from 2:30-6:00pm; members should expect to teach at multiple school sites during the week (mileage is reimbursed between work sites). Fridays are used for planning, team meetings, service and program reporting, and trainings.
