Description

4-H CAPTAL AmeriCorps members plan and lead hands-on science afterschool and enrichment classes at low-income elementary schools throughout Austin, TX. 4-H CAPITAL serves economically-disadvantaged youth who are underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields by providing experiences that encourage them to become successful lifelong learners who are interested in science. All members receive training in classroom management, professional development, and four core areas (Animal Science, Garden Science, Natural Resources, and Engineering & Tinkering; please visit our website for descriptions https://agrilife.org/capital4-h-new/our-science-clubs/ ).

AmeriCorps Team Leads cover classes and support a team of instructors in each of the core content areas through mentorship and assistance with planning and implementing curriculum. Working closely with 4-H CAPTITAL staff, AmeriCorps Team Leads will strengthen relationships with the communities we serve by connecting with STEM professionals and networks. Typical Full Time service hours are Mon-Fri 9:00am - 6:00pm, with occasional hours on evenings and/or weekends. Members will work at multiple school sites throughout the semester (mileage is reimbursed between work sites). Fridays are used for planning, team meetings, service and program reporting, and trainings. Members also participate in community activities, attend trainings, and may provide disaster relief work.

Requirements
• Commit to a term of service mid-August 2019– June 30, 2020
• Serve a minimum of 1700 hours (40-45 hours a week)
• Experience leading groups of youth
• Previous AmeriCorps experience or service background preferred
• U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States
• Must consent to 4-part criminal background check
• A positive attitude and willingness to learn new things!
• Flexibility and the ability to be adaptable to the changing needs of the 4-H CAPITAL program and students

Benefits
• Earn a living stipend of $795 paid twice a month (before taxes)
• Earn a Segal Education award of $5,920 after successful completion your service term
• Student loans may qualify for forbearance during your term of service
• Health insurance and professional development opportunities provided
