NYC Service Year is a citywide movement led by the NYC Service Year Leadership Council to promote, sustain and grow service year programming in NYC, which engages young adults in service to their city, empowering their individual growth and civic leadership while delivering measurable change in key City priorities such as Education, Economic Opportunity, and Environment/Health. New York City is a collection of many neighborhoods within the city’s five boroughs—Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island—each exhibiting its own lifestyle and community. Today, more than 8.6 million people live in the city and 36% of its population is foreign born. New York City is known for its vibrant communities, but our values stand out too, particularly our unwavering commitment to unite and get things done.

Who Are We?

NYC is iconic. It's a unique place, like no other, with unique challenges and endless opportunities. Embrace our City and share your passion for service.Do more, be more. Join NYC Service Year.

More than 70 organizations in New York City host almost 5,000 Service Year members to address some of the city’s greatest needs in disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures, and veterans and military families. NYC Service Year members’ direct service and capacity-building work are a driving force behind many of New York City’s important institutions, including public schools, nonprofit organizations, city agencies and public spaces.  These service opportunities provide Service Year members valuable knowledge, skills, and experiences that prepare them for future employment and civic leadership. New York City Service Year members also receive regular professional development training, resources on navigating the city as a Service Year member, and access to their peers through service projects, networking events, and a NYC Service Year Facebook group.  We represents several local organizations in New York City that are affiliates of national organizations.

Why Serve New York City?

Learn what our own NYC Service Year members have to say about their service year experience!

"The biggest impact national service has is developing the next generation of leaders. Service programs in NYC, and around the country, change the lives of the many people they serve. Communities that are often forgotten or are broadcast in a negative light, receive the help they need, as well as renewed hope." - Uthman Olowa - NYC Service Year Member at Public Allies New York, 2017
