  • Education & Youth

The Latin American Youth Center/ Mayrland Multicultural Youth Center's mission is to empower a diverse population of youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood, through multi-cultural, comprehensive, and innovative programs that address youths' social, academic, and career needs.

  • About Us
Since 1968, LAYC has been committed to transforming the lives of low-income young people and their families. LAYC offers multi-service, comprehensive, and bilingual enrichment, prevention, and intervention programs and opportunities in education, workforce readiness, housing, community building, mental health services, arts, and healthy recreation to over 4,000 individuals each year.

LAYC has special expertise in serving underserved youth, low-income teen parents, homeless youth, youth in foster care and juvenile justice systems, and youth facing mental health, substance abuse, or complex family issues. The MMYC AmeriCorps program focuses on serving underserved middle school youth at Buck Lodge and William Wirt Middle Schools.
  • Our Impact
The LAYC/MMYC AmeriCorps program is an employment opportunity for young people to work as part of the national community service movement. The AmeriCorps program hires, trains, and places Corps members within Prince George’s Public School System middle schools. MMYC’s Americorps works with Buck Lodge and William Wirt Middle School students.

This program provides the opportunity for young adults who are considering a career in youth development or teaching the chance to try their hand in a real-world setting and gain tons of useful skills. Our focus on social justice sets us apart from other programs; we utilize innovative and cohesive approaches to education ranging from project-based learning to restorative practices to LAYC’s special brand of Positive Youth Development (PYD). Members gain new skills, earn money for college and develop valuable work experience, all while helping to make their communities stronger and safer.

LAYC/MMYC's AmeriCorps program also strives to increase parental involvement in their children’s education. The program hosts numerous events to foster relationships between LAYC staff, youth, and parents including parent orientations, field trips, and school special events.
